Lip filler: goals and individual assessment

A lip filler procedure may be considered to adjust volume or contour where appropriate. The choice depends on lip anatomy, facial proportions, previous procedures and the person's preferences. No particular shape is ideal for everyone, and an injectable filler is not risk-free.

The original article described three design ideas. They are presented here as visual styles rather than product names or guaranteed outcomes.

1. Cherry-style design

This idea emphasises the lower lip, definition around the centre of the upper lip and balance at the corners. The original example used an upper-to-lower proportion of about 1:1.5. This is an illustrative description, not a measurement every patient should aim for or a promise that the corners can be lifted.

2. Classic-style design

This approach aims to retain the existing lip outline while considering volume loss or fine lines. The original example also referred to a proportion around 1:1.5. Whether a subtle change is feasible depends on anatomy and previous filler, and “natural” appearance cannot be guaranteed.

3. Fuller-lip design

The original example described a fuller upper and lower lip with a proportion closer to 1:1. Greater volume is not necessarily more suitable. The clinician should discuss limits, symmetry and the risk of overcorrection.

Four aftercare topics to discuss

  1. Touching and pressure: avoid unnecessary pressing or massaging unless specifically instructed. Follow the treating clinician's advice about the first day and subsequent care.
  2. Food and temperature: take care while lips are numb and avoid extremes that irritate the area. The timing for returning to normal activities should follow individual instructions.
  3. Hydration: drink an appropriate amount for your health. A fixed 2–3 litres is not suitable for everyone, particularly if a medical condition requires fluid restriction.
  4. Other procedures: discuss the interval before laser or other treatments around the lips. Do not assume that a fixed four-week interval applies to every procedure and product.

Risks and when to seek help

Swelling, bruising, tenderness, lumps and infection can occur. Accidental injection into a blood vessel can cause serious injury. Severe or increasing pain, pale or discoloured skin, or any vision change needs urgent medical assessment; do not wait for a routine follow-up.

Review photographs show individual outcomes and may include early swelling. They are not a prediction of your result.
