What is HIFU?

HIFU stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. Focused ultrasound delivers energy to selected tissue depths, producing a thermal effect. In aesthetic practice, a clinician may consider an appropriate device and treatment plan for certain degrees of skin laxity. It is not a substitute for surgery in every case.

These are not interchangeable indications: suitability depends on the device, its approved intended use, the applicator, anatomy and the individual. Treatment near the eyes and other sensitive structures requires particular care. A general description should not be taken as a recommendation to treat every listed area.

Changes can develop gradually over weeks to months and vary between individuals. There is no guarantee of a visible change by four weeks, a fixed degree of lifting, or a particular duration of benefit.

Potential advantages and limitations

An ultrasound procedure can be performed without surgical incisions. However, “non-surgical” does not mean painless or risk-free. Ask about possible complications and how they would be managed before deciding.

A consultation should compare expected benefit, alternatives, recovery and cost. More energy, deeper treatment or more shots do not automatically produce a better or safer result.

Who needs an assessment before treatment?

Tell the clinician about pregnancy, breastfeeding, active skin infection including herpes, open wounds, skin cancer or suspicious lesions, autoimmune conditions, a history of unusual scarring, and previous procedures. Also disclose pacemakers, stents or other implants, including their location, and all medicines used.

Some conditions may make treatment unsuitable; others require an individual assessment or instructions specific to the device. This is not a universal contraindication list for every ultrasound system. Treatment should be postponed if the clinician considers the skin or general health unsuitable.

Possible side effects

• Redness (erythema): may occur after treatment. Its extent and duration vary.
• Swelling (edema): can occur and may take time to settle.
• Pain or discomfort: may occur during or after treatment; a claim of “no pain” would be inappropriate.
• Bruising: is possible and does not resolve on an identical timetable for everyone.
• Other complications: altered sensation, burns or nerve-related effects may occur. Ask the treating clinician about device-specific risks and what symptoms require prompt assessment.

Contact the clinic if symptoms are severe, worsening or unexpected rather than assuming every reaction is temporary or normal.

How many shots for a full face or body area?

There is no single shot count suitable for everyone. The clinician needs to assess the area, tissue thickness, previous treatment and the applicator. Facial and body protocols should not be substituted for each other.

What are the indications for a linear applicator?

They depend on the device and applicator. Do not assume that every linear applicator is intended for fat reduction, redness or skin brightening. Ask the clinician which indication is being considered and why it is appropriate.

Can I have treatment after a wrinkle injection or filler procedure?

What if I have had a thread lift?

When might I notice a change?

Changes, if any, may develop over weeks to months. An immediate appearance can also reflect temporary swelling and should not be interpreted as the final result.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no guaranteed number. Reassessment should guide whether another session is justified; additional treatment is not automatically beneficial.

Are side effects always mild and temporary?

No. Although short-term redness, discomfort or swelling can occur, complications can require medical care. Discuss warning signs and contact arrangements before treatment.
